After retiring from the game last year, a former Clemson defensive back is hitting the portal to give football another shot.
The Clemson Insider confirmed that former Tiger safety Lannden Zanders has entered the NCAA transfer portal.
Zanders stepped away from football in August 2022 following several shoulder injuries. He concluded his playing career with the Tigers (2019-21) credited with 57 tackles (5.0 for loss), 3.0 sacks and four pass breakups over 25 games (10 starts).
The No. 24 prospect in North Carolina coming out of Crest High School according to ESPN, Zanders announced on Aug. 3, 2022, that he had decided to retire from football.
That announcement came after the 2021 season when he suffered a season-ending shoulder injury in the opener against Georgia. In 2020, he played in 10 games for the Tigers with nine starts and was credited with 34 tackles (2.5 for loss), three pass breakups, a forced fumble and a sack.
“After battling three shoulder injuries in the span of a year, including playing through the 2020 season with a torn labrum and missing most of last season after getting hurt in the season opener, I have made the incredibly difficult decision to step away from playing the game I love,” Zanders wrote in a post as part of the announcement.
