When the early signing period got underway Wednesday, Clemson inked two of the nation’s top receivers in five-star Bryant Wesco and four-star TJ Moore.
Both Wesco and Moore committed to the Tigers on the same day — June 6 of this year — and now they’re officially on board with Dabo Swinney’s program. Each is ranked among the top 10 wideouts in the country according to On3, with Wesco checking in at No. 7 and Moore right behind at No. 8.
Wesco will be on campus in January as an early enrollee, while Moore is expected to enroll next summer.
“Receiver, we wanted to take two guys there. These guys have been committed, they came into our visit last June, they’ve been committed ever since,” Swinney said. “These are two of the top 10 receivers in the country – two great, great players that really bring everything that we’re looking for.
“Wesco’s coming in midyear, so he’ll get a head start, and really excited about him and just the versatility of his game. He can really do a lot of things. Same thing with TJ, man – just two ballhawks. They can go up and get it. They got length, they’ve got speed, they’ve got change of direction, they’ve got the ability to do a lot of things with the ball in their hands after the catch. So, a lot to like.”
Wesco, a consensus top-35 player nationally according to all major recruiting services, recorded 109 receptions for 1,903 yards and scored 29 touchdowns during his prep career at Midlothian (Texas) High School.
The 6-foot-2, 180-pounder posted 36 catches for 619 yards and 13 touchdowns in just seven games as a senior after hauling in 56 passes for 1,072 yards and 12 scores as a junior.
Moore, meanwhile, tallied 92 receptions for 2,293 yards and 30 touchdowns across his junior and senior seasons at Tampa (Fla.) Catholic while averaging 96 receiving yards per game.
The 6-foot-3, 190-pounder, who had 100 receiving yards in 12 games over his final two years, is ranked among the top 100 overall players in the nation by most recruiting services.
Swinney pointed out that both will “bring big-play ability” to the Tigers’ receiving corps and offense.
“They’re long. They’ve got, again, ball hawking skills. They make acrobatic catches. They both do great things after the catch,” Swinney said.
“TJ is a really big-bodied kid that’s just a great finisher on the ball with a lot of collision balance. And then Wesco, he’s not quite as – he’s long and rangy, he’s still physically (developing). That’s why I’m glad he’s coming midyear, because we need to add a little bit of weight on him between now and August, and we will. But man, that kid plays strong. He’s a finisher, he’s an excellent runner with the ball. For a big guy to be able to maneuver and change direction like he does with breakpoints… Again, these are two top-10 guys in the country, so we’re excited about it.”
Both Wesco and Moore will arrive in Tiger Town with high expectations for themselves, and plenty of polish to go with their tremendous talent.
“I just think they’re long, hard to cover one-on-one type of guys,” Swinney said. “They’ve got a lot of natural instincts to them, got natural ball skills, and very polished guys at this stage. That’s why they’re ranked so high. These guys have made a ton of plays, and they’ll show up the day they get here expecting to be great, and that’s the mindset that they bring.”
