Jags Head Coach Gives Friday Injury Update on Lawrence

After missing practice on Wednesday and Thursday, Trevor Lawrence returned to practice Friday. However, the former Clemson star is still in the NFL’s concussion protocol and has to clear it in order to play in the Jacksonville Jaguars’ game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday.

Jaguars head coach Doug Pederson met with the media Friday morning and gave an update on Lawrence’s status for Sunday’s game, saying that if he doesn’t clear concussion protocol by Saturday when the Jags head to Tampa, then the franchise quarterback won’t travel with the team.

If Lawrence doesn’t play, it would snap his streak of 48 straight regular season starts to begin his NFL career, and backup quarterback C.J. Beathard would get the start against the Buccaneers.

“We’ll give him as much as we can, as much as he can tolerate (at practice),” Pederson said of Lawrence.

Pederson believes Lawrence’s chances of being able to play are better than a coin flip, but noted it would be imperative to see how things go for him in Friday’s practice.

“I think it’s better than that, than a coin flip. But still, this is Friday, and he’s still technically in the protocol until he can clear. So, you really can’t even compare it. It’s not really a coin flip, right. It has to be yes or no type deal,” Pederson said.

“Most guys, if you don’t clear, usually by Friday, then you can’t risk putting a guy on the field this close to game time,” Pederson added. “That’s any player, so just take the position out of it. But he is trending in the right direction, and then hopefully things go well today.”

Lawrence entered concussion protocol following a hit he took late in the Jags’ loss to the Baltimore Ravens this past Sunday night, when he threw for 264 yards and a touchdown with no interceptions while also rushing four times for 41 yards.

This season, the 2021 No. 1 overall pick has passed for 3,525 yards and 18 touchdowns with 10 interceptions.
