Head coach Dabo Swinney is certainly high on the talented trio of cornerbacks that Clemson signed as part of the program’s 2024 class, and Swinney is excited about what they’re bringing to the Tigers’ secondary.
One of the incoming freshmen corners is Ashton Hampton, and Swinney raved about the Florida State University High School (Tallahassee, Fla.) standout after he signed with the Tigers last week alongside his fellow members of the 2024 class.
Swinney loves the athleticism and versatility Hampton possesses, with Swinney pointing out that the four-star prospect can do it all on the football field as a defensive back.
“Ashton, those of you who’ve seen him, he can do anything,” Swinney said. “I mean, this guy, he is long. I mean, like a giant, and can play corner. He can play nickel(back), he can play strong (safety), he can play free (safety). I mean, he’s a freaky type of athlete.”
Hampton played both ways in high school as a DB and receiver, finishing his prep career with 115 receptions for 1,797 yards and 21 touchdowns while also posting 92 career tackles, 10 tackles for loss and six interceptions over his 43 games.
As a senior this season, the 6-foot-2, 190-pounder recorded 53 receptions for 873 yards and 10 touchdowns in 13 games on offense, adding 64 tackles, three tackles for loss, three interceptions and nine passes defensed on defense.
Hampton, who committed to Swinney’s program this past July, also played high school basketball for two years.
“Just really, really advanced from a football standpoint… He’s a great basketball player,” Swinney said. “There’s really nothing he can’t do. Very, very smart kid.”
Hampton’s advanced football skills and smarts are no surprise considering his football background. His father, Alonzo, is the head coach at University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff and was an NFL Europe teammate of Clemson cornerbacks coach Mike Reed with the Frankfurt Galaxy.
“His dad is a college head coach. This is a kid that’s been around this his whole life,” Swinney said. “I mean, you can’t ever have a guy more prepared than Ashton Hampton.”
Along with Hampton, the Tigers signed two other standout four-star corners in Tavoy Feagin and Corian Gipson. Feagin and Gipson are midyear enrollees, while Hampton will enroll next summer.
