Williams Took Playing Football “For Granted” Before Injury

FERNANDINA BEACH, Fla. – Clemson’s freshmen receivers have turned into phenoms in back-to-back seasons, and now the Tigers finally get to bring the two together again.

Last season, it was Antonio Williams who finished with 56 catches for 604 yards and four touchdowns. He’s been riddled with injuries in 2023 and only played in four games, which also maintained his status for a medical redshirt.

Williams is back in the lineup and was working as the second-team field-side receiver during Clemson’s practice at Fernandina Beach High School. Following practice, he spoke about the lessons he’s learned this season while having to spend it on the sideline much more than he’d hope to.

“It’s a blessing to be honest. I’ve taken being on the field for granted and I learned that the is year, so it’s just good to be back out here and be able to play football,” Williams said.

While it’s been a frustrating season, Williams gets to build the tandem with fellow freshman breakout Tyler Brown. The Greenville native finished the regular season with 51 catches for 519 yard and four touchdowns.

With the loss of Beaux Collins to the transfer portal, the pair’s continued growth together is paramount. Williams was asked about what the two can bring on the field together, and he had a big smile taking about it.

“It’s going to be explosive for sure. That’s my guy, you know, all the success he’s been getting, that’s just from all the hard work he’s been putting in man, and it’s just been joyful just to watch him do that,” Williams said.

It feels like a long time coming, but Williams will take the field for the first time since Oct. 21 when Clemson takes on Kentucky in the TaxSlayer Gator Bowl. This is right on time, as the Tigers need the explosiveness he speaks of desperately.
