On First Take, ESPN personality Stephen A. Smith weighed in on whether he’s concerned about Trevor Lawrence as a franchise quarterback.
Smith said he’s concerned about the former Clemson star’s inability to close out games for the Jacksonville Jaguars, who got off to an 8-3 start this season before losing four straight games and five of their final six, en route to ultimately missing the playoffs.
“That’s why I’m very concerned about him as the face of your franchise, because you gotta be able to close out games,” Smith said. “He’s got the height, he can make every requisite throw. We know he’s got the talent. We get that from him. You had Calvin Ridley to throw the football to this year. I expected better.
“And in the midst of that four-game losing streak… the last three games of that four-game losing streak, before they beat Carolina (on Dec. 31), I’m looking at this guy can’t even complete 60 percent of his passes. So, I got concerns about him.”
In 2022, Lawrence led the Jaguars on a remarkable midseason turnaround, helping them rally from a 2-6 record at the end of October to win the AFC South for the first time since 2017 and reach the playoffs. Lawrence and the Jags then pulled off a historic comeback from a 27-0 deficit in a wild-card playoff game against the Chargers before falling to the eventual Super Bowl champion Chiefs in the divisional round.
The 2021 No. 1 overall pick, Lawrence battled through multiple injuries this season and played in all but one game, completing 65.6 percent of his passes for 4,016 yards and 21 touchdowns with 14 interceptions.
“I’m not completely downing him. I know what kind of talent he is,” Smith said. “But with Doug Pederson as your coach, a Super Bowl champion who’s known to coach quarterbacks, who’s known to coach offense, for you to be playing for him, OK — this is not Urban Meyer coaching on the NFL level, this is Doug Pederson — and for you to be playing for him, and with the expectations that they had coming off of last season and to nosedive the way that they did this year, I’m very concerned about him.”
