This week, ESPN ranked the NFL’s 100 most valuable players of the 2023 season (subscription required) and a trio of former Clemson stars made the list.
New York Giants defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence is the highest-ranked former Tiger, checking in at No. 49 overall.
He’s the third highest-ranked defensive tackle behind only the Rams’ Aaron Donald (No. 27) and Chiefs’ Chris Jones (No. 38).
Lawrence earned Pro Bowl and second-team All-Pro honors for the second consecutive year in 2023. In 16 games this season, the 6-foot-4, 340-pounder filled up the stat sheet while racking up 21 quarterback hits, 4.5 sacks, 53 tackles (32 solo), seven tackles for loss, two passes defended and 60-plus total pressures.
A fifth-year pro, Lawrence has racked up 266 tackles (28 for loss) and 21 sacks across 80 games (73 starts) since being taken by the Giants in the first round (17th overall) of the 2019 NFL Draft.
Trevor Lawrence is the next highest-ranked Clemson pro on ESPN’s list of the 100 most valuable NFL players of 2023, with the Jacksonville Jaguars’ franchise quarterback coming in at No. 72 overall.
Lawrence, the No. 13 quarterback on the list, battled through multiple injuries this season but played in all but one game. He completed 65.6 percent of his passes for 4,016 yards and 21 touchdowns with 14 interceptions.
The 2021 No. 1 overall pick and a 2022 Pro Bowler, Lawrence has completed 63.8 percent of his passes for 11,770 yards and 58 touchdowns with 39 interceptions in three NFL seasons.
Christian Wilkins also cracked ESPN’s list at No. 95 overall.
In 17 regular season games this season, the Miami Dolphins defensive tackle posted 65 total tackles (10 for loss), 23 quarterback hits, two passes defended, a forced fumble and two fumble recoveries to go with his nine sacks – double his previous career-high of 4.5 sacks in 2021.
Wilkins has amassed 355 tackles (43 for loss) and 20.5 sacks since being drafted by the Dolphins in the first round (13th overall) of the 2019 draft.
