Clemson Hopes to Break Long Losing Streak at Duke

CLEMSON — On January 11, 2020, Clemson basketball did something no one ever thought would happen. It beat North Carolina in Chapel Hill, N.C.

Clemson was 0-59 at Chapel Hill before snapping the longest winless streak on an opponent’s homecourt in NCAA history.

On Saturday, the Tigers will try to end another historic losing streak when they attempted to snap a 20-game losing streak at Duke’s Cameron Indoor Stadium. Their last win at Duke came in 1995, a 75-70 victory.

Clemson, which is coming off a road win at Florida State on Jan. 20, is just 4-61 in Cameron Indoor Stadium. The Tigers’ other three victories came in 1976, ’77 and ’84.

The Blue Devils won the first 28 meetings there.

However, Clemson is not thinking about its 20-game losing streak at Duke. Instead, the Tigers are hunting for an ACC win they need to get after dropping home games earlier this month to North Carolina and Georgia Tech.

“It does not matter who we play next, this team just needs something positive to happen,” Clemson head coach Brad Brownell said. “We played responsibly well for thirty-seven to thirty-eight minutes against Georgia Tech. Georgia Tech is a good team. They battled us and we battled them.

“We gave away a nine-point lead in the last two minutes and that is painful because we prepped really hard. We worked hard, we practiced hard. We were coming off a win and we were trying to build momentum and it was like we got pushed back down the steps. But I give my guys credit. They did not hang their heads.”

Of course, having to do it against the No. 12 team in the country will be difficult.

The good news is the Tigers (13-5, 3-4 ACC) should have some confidence against the Blue Devils. The last time these two teams met, Clemson won 72-64 at Littlejohn Coliseum. However, that was in Clemson last season.

Duke (14-4, 5-2 ACC) had won eight straight before being upset by Pitt at Cameron last week. The Panthers connected on 10 of 20 three-pointers in pulling off the 80-76 victory.

Making threes is what the Tigers will have to do in order to gain their first win in Durham in 29 years.

After shooting poorly behind the arc most of the ACC season, Clemson finally got back on track in the win over the Seminoles. The Tigers connected on 7 of their 17 attempts from long range, while shooting 51 percent overall.

Point guard Chase Hunter scored 14 points, while PJ Hall added 13 points. Joe Girard dropped in 10.

Brownell hopes the Tigers will be holding their heads high come Saturday evening by pulling off the upset at Duke.
