The Jacksonville Jaguars are committed to Trevor Lawrence as the franchise quarterback, according to general manager Trent Baalke.
Meeting with the media this week, Baalke said there is “no doubt” Lawrence is the long-term QB in Jacksonville, and that a contract extension for the team’s 2021 No. 1 overall draft pick will happen “at the appropriate time.”
The former Clemson star is now eligible for an extension, having played three seasons in the league.
“As far as Trevor and the long-term relationship with this team, there’s no doubt in that,” Baalke said. “We’re going to get something done at the appropriate time.”
In 2023, Lawrence completed 65.6 percent of his passes for 4,016 yards and 21 touchdowns with 14 interceptions while averaging 7.1 yards per pass attempt and posting an 88.5 passer rating. On the ground, the 6-foot-6, 220-pounder rushed for 339 yards and four scores.
Lawrence battled through several injuries throughout the season, and managed to play in all but one game – the only game he has missed in his NFL career thus far.
Baalke said a big priority for the Jags moving forward is to keep Lawrence healthy, and they must make a collective effort to do that.
“I think Trevor had another learning year, right? Like we all do when we’re a third-year guy in this league,” Baalke said. “I think there’s some areas he made great strides in. You look at this season, one thing we’ve got to do is we’ve got to — two things, and it works both ways — we’ve got to do a better job of keeping him safe and protected, and he’s got to do a better job of protecting himself.
“Unfortunately, he had four key injuries this year. When your quarterback has a throwing-shoulder injury, a knee injury, an ankle injury and a concussion all in one year, that’s alarming. So, we’ve got to work to improve that. And that’s not one factor — there’s a lot of things that contribute to that. But we do have to do a better job there.”
A Pro Bowler in 2022, Lawrence has completed 63.8 percent of his passes for 11,770 yards and 58 touchdowns with 39 interceptions over 50 career starts in his young NFL career.
