DURHAM, N.C. – Clemson’s trip to Cameron Indoor Stadium turned out to be a thriller as the Tigers and No. 12 Duke Blue Devils shared 12 lead changes before Tyrese Proctor’s two free throws with a second remaining secured a 72-71 victory for the Blue Devils.
Brad Brownell’s team battled but late turnovers opened the door for the Blue Devils, who found a way with a multitude of opportunities. Here’s the 411 on the loss as Clemson falls to 3-5 in ACC play and 13-6 overall.
-The offensive struggles were evident for Clemson in the first half, going 4:11 without points near halftime until a Josh Beadle free throw. Those runs are normally death sentences and it led to a 17-2 run for Duke.
-Chase Hunter was excellent for Clemson in transition. He finished with 11 points, but he was lethal after turnovers and rebounds. Hunter pushed the pace and it helped the Tigers claw back into the game after following behind, 32-20, late in the first half.
-PJ Hall was the victor of the battle inside with 19 points and 10 rebounds, also forcing a foul-out of Kyle Filipowski with seven seconds remaining. The latter had a heroic and-one to help escape with a win, but Hall’s performance was a great one.
-Jared McCain caught fire for Duke in the second half with 16 points on 6 of 8 shooting. He kept the Blue Devils alive as Clemson stormed back into the game before free throws took over.
-The first half was one to forget for Joseph Girard. He was held scoreless and on the receiving end of Proctor’s nine-point barrage, followed by a lot of jawing. It was a different story after halftime as Girard led the Tigers with 13 points in the second half and spearheaded the comeback efforts.
-Rebounds were all Clemson in Cameron Indoor. The Tigers allowed just four offensive rebounds and zero second chance points. It was entirely different for Clemson’s offense, which had 11 boards leading to 15 second-chance points.
TURNING POINT
It was a four-point lead for Clemson, 69-65, with 2:15 to play. Three careless turnovers by the Tigers gave the Blue Devils ample opportunities to steal the game and they did just that.
Still, it ended up being a back-and-forth finish. Proctor drove and drew a foul in the last second half, followed by two makes to steal the victory. Clemson attempted a Hail Mary heave at the end, but the clock ran out on any hopes of a victory.
