Problems with College Football Lead ACC Coach to Leave for NFL

An ACC head coach is reportedly heading back to coach in the NFL.

Boston College head coach Jeff Hafley is expected to be hired as the Green Bay Packers’ new defensive coordinator, per ESPN’s Pete Thamel.

As for why Hafley is leaving BC to become the DC for Green Bay?

One of the reasons, according to Thamel, is the current state of college football.

“He wants to go coach football again in a league that is all about football,” a source told Thamel. “College coaching has become fundraising, NIL and recruiting your own team and transfers. There’s no time to coach football anymore.”

Hafley has been the head coach at Boston College since 2020, compiling a 22-26 record across four seasons, including a 7-6 record in 2023 capped by the Eagles’ win over a top-25 SMU team in the Fenway Bowl.

The 44-year-old Hafley was an assistant coach in the NFL from 2012-18 for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Cleveland Browns and San Francisco 49ers, prior to spending 2019 as Ohio State’s defensive coordinator and then taking over as BC’s head coach.
