Jacksonville Jaguars head coach Doug Pederson says Trevor Lawrence must improve in this area going into next season.
The Jaguars’ franchise quarterback will have to work on limiting turnovers in 2024, according to Pederson.
Lawrence turned the ball over 21 times during the 2023 campaign – the most turnovers in the NFL. That turnover tally includes 14 interceptions and seven lost fumbles.
“It’s the biggest thing that he has to focus on moving forward,” Pederson said. “We just can’t have this amount of turnovers. How we turn the ball over, where we turn the ball over, it doesn’t matter — we’ve got to protect the football. That’s the No. 1 thing.”
Lawrence’s turnover issues this past season aren’t totally his fault, as he dealt with multiple injuries that contributed to some of his problems. The former Clemson star also didn’t get a lot of help from his team’s running game, which put plenty of pressure on Lawrence to try to make plays.
With that said, Lawrence has thrown 39 interceptions and fumbled 33 times since entering the NFL, so it’s clearly something he and the Jags need him to cut down on going into his fourth season in the league.
“For the quarterback, obviously, the person that touches the ball every snap, we got to make sure the emphasis is taking care of the ball,” Pederson said.
In 2023, when the Jags started 8-3 before losing five of their last six games and ultimately missing the playoffs, Lawrence completed 65.6 percent of his passes for 4,016 yards and 21 touchdowns while averaging 7.1 yards per pass attempt and posting an 88.5 passer rating. On the ground, the 6-foot-6, 220-pounder rushed for 339 yards and four scores.
A Pro Bowler in 2022, Lawrence has completed 63.8 percent of his passes for 11,770 yards and 58 touchdowns over 50 career starts in his NFL career since being selected No. 1 overall in the 2021 draft.
