No. 5 Clemson Squeezes Out 3-2 Win Over No. 13 Oregon

CLEARWATER, Fla. — No. 5 Clemson squeezed out a tough 3-2 win over No. 13 Oregon Saturday night at the NFCA Leadoff Classic. The Tigers move to 4-0 on the season while the Ducks fall to 3-2. 

Oregon plated the first run of the game in the top of the first as they used consecutive singles and a sac fly for a 1-0 lead.

Clemson answered right back in the bottom of the frame. McKenzie Clark led things off with a double, stole third, and came in to score on a sac fly by Alex Brown to tie the game at 1-1.

The Ducks retook the lead in the top of the fourth using a leadoff single, stolen base, wild pitch, and sac fly to go up 2-1.

The Tigers responded right back in the bottom of the inning. Valerie Cagle started things off with a single and moved to third on a double by Julia Knowler. Cagle came in to score on a beautiful squeeze bunt by Alia Logoleo to tie the game. Maddie Moore followed with a RBI single to give for a 3-2 lead.

Clemson reliever Valerie Cagle (1-0) earned the win after allowing one run (one earned) on two hits with four strikeouts in 5.0 innings. Oregon starter Morgan Scott (1-1) suffered the loss after allowing three runs (three earned) on seven hits in 5.0 innings. 

The Tigers finished the game with seven hits, led by Clark and Moore with two each, while the Ducks tallied five hits in the contest.

Clemson wraps up action in the NFCA Leadoff Classic on Sunday morning as they take on Missouri at 10:00 a.m.
