ESPN updated its 2024 Way-Too-Early Top 25 this week in the aftermath of all the college football chaos with coaching changes and transfer portal movement.
While there’s been a lot of happenings and new developments in the sport since the 2023 campaign came to a close, Clemson stayed status quo in ESPN’s updated Way-Too-Early Top 25 for the 2024 season.
The Tigers remain at No. 19 in the rankings after previously being ranked there in the 2024 Way-Too-Early Top 25 released by ESPN in early January following the national championship game.
Here’s what ESPN’s Mark Schlabach had to say about Clemson, which is coming off a 9-4 (4-4 ACC) season in 2023:
If you believe quarterback Cade Klubnik is going to continue to grow in offensive coordinator Garrett Riley’s system, the Tigers might be poised to catch Florida State and take another ACC title. If you believe coach Dabo Swinney hasn’t done enough to reload his roster after losing star tailback Will Shipley and a handful of defensive stars to the NFL draft, then it might be another subpar season by Clemson standards. Hiring former Ole Miss coach Matt Luke to coach the offensive line should help, but the Tigers might still be short-handed in terms of talent up front. The Tigers are also going to have to develop some big-play weapons at receiver. Getting Cole Turner and Antonio Williams back from injuries might help.
After ending the 2023 campaign on a five-game winning streak, including the 38-35 victory over Kentucky in the Gator Bowl on Dec. 29, Clemson posted its 13th consecutive nine-win season and 14th overall in Dabo Swinney’s 15 full seasons as head coach.
The Tigers also extended their streak of at least one postseason win (conference championship, bowl game and/or national championship game) to 13 consecutive seasons, the longest streak on record in major college football history.
Clemson opens the 2024 season at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta on Saturday, Aug. 31, against Georgia — which remained the No. 1 team in ESPN’s updated early top 25.
Florida State (No. 15, previously No. 16) is the highest-ranked ACC team in ESPN’s updated rankings, followed by NC State (No. 18, previously No. 20) and then Clemson, Louisville (No. 21, previously No. 22) and Miami (No. 24, previously unranked).
Ohio State, Oregon, Texas and Notre Dame round out the top five behind Georgia in ESPN’s updated 2024 Way-Too-Early Top 25.
