Uiagalelei on What It Will Be Like to Face Clemson as FSU’s QB

Clemson will face a very familiar name at quarterback on Oct. 5, 2024, when the Tigers take on the Florida State Seminoles at Doak Campbell Stadium.

Following three years at Clemson from 2020-22 and then one season at Oregon State in 2023, DJ Uiagalelei is in line to be the starting signal-caller for FSU in 2024 after transferring to Tallahassee this offseason.

Uiagalelei met with the media for the first time as a Seminole this week and spoke about what it will be like for him to square off against his former team when Clemson comes to town next fall.

“I think yeah [it will be weird], because that’s somewhere I played at,” Uiagalelei said. “That was my first place I played at. That’s the place I graduated from. A lot of my friends are still on the team, a lot of the coaches I still know, and I still have a lot of love for Clemson, and they did nothing but—it was an amazing time I had at Clemson.

“Granted, my journey ended up taking me somewhere else, but I loved my time at Clemson. Coach Swinney is an amazing coach. All the guys there were great. Every single staff member there was great, and I loved it. I graduated. My best friends still play there. I still talk to them to this day. Like, my brothers are still on that team. When that time comes, it’ll definitely be different.”

A former five-star prospect from California, Uiagalelei thrived in a couple of spot starts for Clemson as a true freshman in 2020, but unfortunately, things didn’t quite pan out for him with the Tigers over the next two seasons. He struggled in his first full season as the starting quarterback in 2021 before having an up-and-down 2022 campaign that saw him ultimately lose the starting job to Cade Klubnik in the ACC Championship Game before transferring to Oregon State.

Overall, Uiagalelei went 22-6 as the starter for the Tigers. In 36 career games across his three seasons at Clemson, he completed 59.8 percent of his passes for 5,681 yards and 36 touchdowns with 17 interceptions, to go with 913 rushing yards and 15 rushing touchdowns.

For Oregon State this past season, Uiagalelei completed 57.1 percent of his passes for 2,638 yards and 21 touchdowns with seven interceptions. The 6-foot-4, 252-pounder also had 219 rushing yards and six more scores on the ground.
