CLEMSON — It’s hard to find anything that went wrong for 10th-ranked Clemson at the plate this past weekend. The Tigers did pretty much what they wanted in sweeping Xavier in three games at Doug Kingsmore Stadium.
“We have a really good offense. We have some really good players, one through nine (in the order) and even some guys on the bench,” second baseman Blake Wright said. “We have a really good offense and we connected.”
In all, Clemson connected bat to ball for 38 hits in the three games combined, including 11 extra base hits, while scoring 33 runs. Four players batted .416 or better.
“The big innings were really the storyline of the weekend,” Clemson head coach Erik Bakich said. “A big inning for us is three or more runs, so to be able to have multiple innings in a game where you are scoring three or more runs, that’s huge.”
The Tigers (3-0) scored three or more runs six times in the three games, including three in Sunday’s 11-7 win.
“It is a good offense because it is a one-through-nine offense,” Bakich said. “Then there is like ten, eleven, twelve, thirteen, fourteen on the bench, too, that will hit in the middle of the order for a lot of teams.
“We do feel good about the depth and just the balance. There are no easy outs in that lineup, and you saw it today.”
Cam Cannarella led Clemson this weekend with a 7-for-13 (.538) performance which included five RBIs and a double. Alden Mathes was right behind him with four hits in eight official at-bats (.500), which included six RBIs and a home run.
Blake Wright also hit a home run this weekend and had four RBIs and a triple, while going 6-for-14 (.429) at the plate. Nolan Nawrocki (5-for-12) drove in five runs with a home run and a double.
“We have offensive game goals, and it is to have fifty-percent quality at-bats, plus-minus in walks and hit by pitches compared to strikeouts,” Bakich said. “We were really good in those two categories this weekend. We have some other goals in terms of getting runners to third from second with no outs and knocking in some runs from third with less than two outs and we were good on Friday. We were not good (on Saturday). We want to be at least seventy percent in executing that. We were probably close today.”
Plate decisions are situations Clemson works on daily, swinging at strikes and taking balls and having a good approach. That practice appears to being paying off. The Tigers drew 11 walks on Sunday, 10 on Saturday and six in Friday’s game.
“Tip of the cap to (our players),” Bakich said. “With less than two strikes they are hunting pitches to do damage with and with two strikes they are hunting pitches to do damage with and with two outs they are battling.
“What they find is if they can hold the zone, the are going to draw a lot of walks. So far so good.”
Clemson will host Presbyterian College at 4 p.m., on Tuesday.
