Following his highly productive three seasons at Clemson from 2021-23, Will Shipley made a decision on his future in early January, with the star running back announcing that he would be entering the 2024 NFL Draft.
So, with Shipley moving on to the next level, how does he stack up among the prospects at his position in this year’s draft class?
SCOUTD, an NFL Draft and rookie hub, ranked the top running backs for the 2024 draft and slotted Shipley at No. 10 on the list.
SCOUTD gives Shipley a Round 3 grade and compares the 5-foot-11, 210-pounder to former Bengals, Texans and Patriots running back Rex Burkhead.
“Shipley is a versatile back who makes his money as a uniquely utilized weapon,” SCOUTD wrote. “He is a crisp and fundamental player with great vision in open space. Shipley’s start/stop speed is excellent, he’s able to control his movements with ease, but lacks straight home-run speed. He’s not a physical runner, and likely won’t add much as a grinder on the ground. Shipley is better suited outside the tackles, as a pass-catcher and finesse runner. His ball security needs to improve and his lack of traditional production will limit his value, but Shipley should be able to find a productive role on a more modern NFL offense.”
Shipley concluded his prolific Clemson career in the top 10 in school history in total touchdowns (33), rushing touchdowns (31), 100-yard rushing games (10), all-purpose yards (4,253) and kickoff return yards (904). He also finished ranked 11th in rushing yards (2,747).
In 2023, Shipley became the ninth player in school history to score 30 career touchdowns and the eighth player at Clemson ever to rush for 30 touchdowns. He finished this past season with 827 rushing yards and five rushing touchdowns on 167 carries to go with 31 catches for 244 yards and two receiving scores in 12 games.
