Tigers Rally to Beat UConn in Extra-Inning Thriller

CLEMSON — The 10th-ranked Clemson Tigers extended their perfect record in the Clemson Classic tournament with a 3-2 victory in extra innings over UConn Saturday afternoon at McWhorter Stadium.

The Tigers’ victory came in the last play of the game. With two outs, shortstop Alia Logoleo knocked in second baseman Maddie Moore for a game-winning RBI in the bottom of the eighth inning.

Clemson (10-2) clawed its way back for a late rally. After UConn took a 2-1 lead in the top of the sixth inning, the Tigers rallied with a single from right fielder Lindsey Garcia, a fielding error, and a drawn walk to load the bases. With one out, Valerie Cagle knocked in Garcia with a sacrifice fly to centerfield to tie the game, ultimately sending the game into extra innings.

After three scoreless innings, a single from Logoleo scored Moore in the fourth to give Clemson a 1-0 lead. Moore stole second base and was sent to third thanks to a wild pitch from UConn pitcher Hallie Siems.

Logoleo’s RBI marked the only score until UConn took a 2-1 lead in the sixth inning.

The Tigers started their day with a dominant 10-1 victory over Miami of Ohio. Cagle, the reigning Collegiate Player of the Year, led the charge against Miami with two home runs and career-tying eight RBIs.

However, Clemson struggled to find its offensive footing against the Huskies after scoring 10 runs on 10 hits against Miami.

While the bats were not hot against UConn (4-10), Clemson demonstrated their depth in the bullpen. Senior Reagan Spencer started in the circle for the Tigers, striking out six batters and allowing zero runs on three hits.

The Tigers have held all three opponents, thus far, to four runs in the Clemson Classic. Brooke McCubbin allowed only one run in five innings of play against Miami.

Cagle relieved Spencer in the sixth inning of the UConn game. After giving up two quick runs, she shut down UConn batters, allowing no runs and no hits in the last two innings.
