Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney met with the media following Wednesday’s practice and gave an injury update on this wide receiver.
Swinney spoke about redshirt junior Troy Stellato, who was full go at Monday’s practice, but pulled up and appeared to have tweaked something on his right leg during the portion of practice that was open to the media.
“Troy’s always banged up. Always,” Swinney said. “I’ve never seen him when something’s not hurting on him. He’s got a hurt thumb or finger or something, but he battles through. He’s a tough kid.”
Swinney then added that Stellato will have cleanup surgery for a shoulder issue and likely won’t finish spring ball. He’ll get 10 spring practices in before the surgery.
The Tigers want him to be fully healthy for the summer and fall camp.
“He’s actually a guy that probably will not finish spring,” Swinney said. “He needs a little cleanup surgery. But we made the decision that he needed to really get all the spring he could get before we did that. We don’t want him to miss any of the summer, so that’s why we didn’t do it before the spring. Because if you know anything about Troy, he hasn’t really had a spring. He hasn’t had much of a spring or a fall camp since he’s been here. So, it’s really important for him. It’s not something he can’t play with, but we need to get him cleaned up so he can be really 100 percent.”
Stellato battled injuries over his first two seasons at Clemson before breaking out last year, when he recorded 38 catches for 321 yards and a touchdown in 12 games (six starts). The 6-foot-1, 190-pounder enters 2024 having caught 30 passes for 336 yards and a touchdown in 14 career games (six starts).
