A major change is reportedly coming to the college football recruiting calendar.
ESPN’s Pete Thamel reported that the Collegiate Commissioners Association (CCA) voted Wednesday to move up the early signing period to early December.
That new December signing period will make it prior to when the winter transfer portal window opens.
This will make Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney happy, as he has wanted to see this happen for quite some time.
He has long been in favor of moving up the early signing period so it’s earlier than when the transfer portal opens, that way high school prospects wouldn’t be as negatively affected by their scholarships getting taken away and given to targets in the portal.
“I’m for anything earlier than the portal, because I think it really hurts the high school kids. I really do,” Swinney said. “So, I think it gives the high school, an opportunity for those kids to be signed before the portal opens. I think that’s a positive.”
The Commissioners did vote today to move up the winter Signing Day, per ESPN source. That day will now come in early December before portal opens. https://t.co/7P17K6hdWe

As for the potential of having three signing periods — with a June signing window possibly being implemented — a decision on that has been pushed back to the CCA’s meeting in June, per Thamel, who reported that the CCA wants “to do more diligence on this Signing Day model.”
