The long-term deal wasn’t achieved in Cincinnati, so where is the next home for former Tiger wide receiver Tee Higgins?
Higgins requested a trade from the Bengals Monday and he’ll hold a high market as one of the best receivers in the NFL. It’s difficult to gauge what the price will be because Cincinnati doesn’t hold much leverage.
With that in mind, here’s the teams that Higgins would fit in best with and a potential reunion that would please Clemson fans.
Jacksonville Jaguars
Trevor Lawrence said he would be “very surprised” if the Bengals let go of Higgins, but now the hands are forced. He made it clear that this return to college days would please him and now the possibility is real.
Jacksonville has a strong receiving corps with Calvin Ridley, but he’s an unrestricted free agent. He could return to play alongside Christian Kirk and Zay Jones, but that’s yet to be decided.
What is certain is the chemistry between Lawrence and Higgins. The pair were national champions in 2018 and combined for one of the best tandems the Tigers have seen. Should the teams be able to come to an agreement, the trio of Lawrence, Higgins and Travis Etienne Jr. would make Duval County Clemson’s second home.
Kansas City Chiefs
This one is a no-brainer. Fresh off a third Super Bowl win in five years, wide receiver wasn’t a strength of the team. That didn’t matter because Patrick Mahomes is likely the most talented quarterback football has ever seen.
Bringing in Higgins would put a star on the outside, and it’s safe to say he would flourish alongside Mahomes. As of now, Rashee Rice, Justin Watson and Skyy Moore are the starting receivers.
Pairing the veteran Higgins, who has two 1,000-yard seasons under his belt with the star rookie Rice would more than compensate for what Kansas City lost with Tyreek Hill’s departure. Higgins must enjoy the idea of a nearly guaranteed path to a Super Bowl as well.
Carolina Panthers
The riskiest of the options, Higgins would be joining a team that went 2-15 and has little optimism heading into 2024. Starting receiver DJ Chark is a free agent, opening the door for Higgins to take his place. Cap also isn’t a problem for Carolina, and the proximity to Clemson would play a healthy factor.
Bryce Young is in need of a reliable receiver to stimulate his growth as an NFL quarterback, and Higgins can provide that. If the Panthers can land Higgins, it would breathe some life into an offense that struggled.
