Drew Reacts to Brownell saying Big 12 Manipulates NET Rankings

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Baylor head coach Scott Drew was asked about Brad Brownell’s comments regarding how Big 12 teams have manipulated their schedule to help their NET rankings.

“They’re playing 300-level teams and winning by 40 and 50 points to increase their offensive and defensive efficiency numbers, which is a big part of the NET tool,” Clemson’s head coach said on Clemson’s flagship station, WCCP The Roar on Feb. 28.

“I would interject to say that’s not entirely correct — the quality of the opponent is taken into account,” he continued. “Our league has zero teams in the top 50 of the NET that have a non-conference strength of schedule 250 or higher. The Big 12 has six teams.”

Brownell specifically pointed out Cincinnati and Iowa State as teams he felt were manipulating the system.

Drew said Saturday from the FedEx Forum in Memphis, Tenn., as he was previewing his team’s NCAA West Regional matchup with Clemson that they do not need any kind of extra motivation for an NCAA Tournament game.

“Every coach believes whatever league they are in, believes their league is tough and is the best league,” he said. “If you watch college basketball and the parity, it is hard to win in any week. I know we have enough to be focused about, starting with a well coached team and great players.”

Clemson, the No. 6 seed, and Baylor, the No. 3 seed, will tip off Sunday at 6:10 p.m. on TNT.
