We’re never out of the fight.
That’s the message Clemson infielder Blake Wright shared with his team at the opening banquet and it rung true through his game-tying grand slam Saturday.
The Tigers entered the ninth inning down 8-1 to Florida State and it appeared a series-deciding Sunday was awaiting. Against all odds, Clemson scored eight runs and transfer Jacob Hinderleider walked it off at Doug Kingsmore Stadium.
Head coach Erik Bakich said he felt like a fan and it was a “Christmas morning” experience from the dugout.
“If they can do things like that, they can do anything,” Bakich said.
Wright is on a tear in March. In the last nine games, he’s hit eight home runs and it’s officially time to track how many he could finish the season with.
He has seven RBI’s over the first two games of the Florida State series, a heavy reason why the Tigers ended the Seminoles undefeated streak and secured the series win.
“It just shows the toughness and resilience of this team,” Wright said.
Wright is up to 12 home runs and 35 RBI’s on the season, pressing for career-highs in nearly every statistic before the halfway mark in the season. Clemson has literal home-run hitters all throughout its lineup and Wright can’t help but do so as of late.
The No. 4 Tigers are now 21-2 on the season, on the cusp of a potential statement with a series sweep over Florida State. Wright and Clemson’s streak can continue Sunday as first pitch is set for 1 p.m. in the series finale.
