CLEMSON – Year 1 was just the appetizer for Clemson’s starting cornerback and the competition at practice is his key to success.
Avieon Terrell waited his turn in 2023 behind Nate Wiggins and Sheridan Jones. By the end of the season, Terrell proved he was the starter for the future.
The win over Georgia Tech was when Terrell made his leap. He made a one-handed interception and broke up two passed as Clemson put Haynes King and the Yellow Jackets in a panic.
From then on, Terrell became a key part of the rotation. He made his first start in the win over Notre Dame, helping limit the Irish offense.
After getting back from spring break, Terrell detailed how he can produce during the season. For 2024’s preparation, he credits going against the likes of Antonio Williams and Bryant Wesco Jr. in practice.
“I feel like I’m guarding the best every day. That’s good competition in practice so me guarding them every day, I’ll be good week one. I like guarding Antonio and Wesco” Terrell said
The best is no understatement from Terrell and he’s going to be tasked with the best receiver every week. No matter who that is, he feels like the matchups he faces in practice are the biggest challenge so Saturdays become routine for him.
Alongside Terrell is Shelton Lewis, another player who was thrown into the fire and it paid dividends. The two sophomores are tasked as the starting outside cornerbacks and take on an impressive Georgia offense to start the season.
For now, the practice matchups are the sharpening Terrell appreciated and everyone will get a good look at it during the Spring Game April 6.
