Several Offensive Players Shine in Clemson Scrimmage

CLEMSON — Clemson held its final scrimmage of the spring Wednesday at Memorial Stadium, and though there was not a winner or a loser in the two-hour scrimmage, there were some playmakers on both sides of the line of scrimmage.

Quarterback Cade Klubnik bounced back from a so-so scrimmage prior to spring break to lead an offense that had people making plays all afternoon. According to offensive coordinator Garrett Riley, Klubnik made plays with arms and his legs, using both to spark the offense.

The junior had a big pass play to freshman wide receiver Bryant Wesco, as well as a long run.

“Cade had a really nice day. He was consistent. He really sparked the whole day with the play he made with his feet,” Riley said. “He found Wesco for a pretty nice play and that kind of just sparked the whole day. I was happy with Cade and how he kind of bounced back from the last scrimmage.”

Fellow quarterback Christopher Vizzina also played well. Riley was pleased with how the redshirt freshman quickly bounced back after making a bad play earlier in the scrimmage.

“CV is doing a lot of really good things. He is improving. He is getting reps. He is becoming more confident every single day, but he kind of had a bad play,” Riley said. “The great thing you see in these scrimmages is he had a bad play, but he bounced back and had a great play after that and that is always a good sign when you see that from a quarterback.”

Besides the two quarterbacks, running back Keith Adams took advantage of his opportunity in getting more first-team reps with Phil Mafah sitting out most of the scrimmage.

“Keith Adams had a big day today,” Riley said. “We held Mafah a little bit, so Keith had a huge opportunity for himself, and he capitalized. He had a huge day for us.”

Overall, it was a productive day for the Clemson offense.

“We had different people make big plays, whether it was a third-down conversion, a long play, a touchdown or whatever it may be,” Riley said. “Running backs, some of the tight ends, receivers, quarterbacks made a couple of plays with their legs, which was good to see.

“We kind of had some playmakers emerge and that is what you got to have.”

On the defensive side of the ball, defensive coordinator Wes Goodwin said his defense played well, as he spoke about Peter Woods, Wade Woodaz, Sammy Brown and Tavoy Feagin among others.

“I have been really pleased with where we are at defensively,” Goodwin said.

The Tigers have a couple of more practices remaining before wrapping up the spring on April 6 with their annual Orange & White Spring Game at Death Valley.
