CLEMSON – Wes Goodwin and the Clemson defensive staff made a bold decision this offseeason, moving two interior defenders to the edge. Turns out there’s a simple reason for it.

Formerly defensive tackles Peter Woods and Caden Story were both moved to the defensive end spot this spring. Given the depth on the interior, the change makes sense but it’s something Goodwin does to build his defense.

The Tigers finished No. 8 in total defense and a lot of that came from the work in the trenches. Peter Woods was a stud as as freshman, being named to multiple Freshman All-American teams. Following the final spring scrimmage, Clemson’s defensive coordinator talked about why the move makes sense.

“That’s always been a philosophy of mine just from all the d-line guys that I work with. Big guys beat little guys all day every day and just having big guys on the edge to set the edge in the run game. That’s how we can attack most of the time because we’ve been so good inside…he’s productive physical efficient as a pass rusher as well in early downs,” Goodwin said.

Woods finished the season with 13 solo tackles, 2.5 for loss and a forced fumble. He was also the highest graded Tiger on the defensive end according to PFF. Goodwin toyed with Woods position during his first year, playing over 30 snaps on the edge and now it’s his full time spot.

“He’s one that gives you position versatility and if you go back and study our season last year, at times we played bigger guys on the edges as well,” Goodwin said.

Story is a work in progress for Clemson. He played in 10 games last season on the interior, but he’s making a complete change that could open the door for extra playing time. Goodwin is pleased with his progress even as there’s a lot of work to be done.

“He’s been solid too. Still learning and progressing. Things are trending up with him there too,” Goodwin said.

The mantra of ‘big guys beat little guys’ will be showcased in 2024. Beyond these two, the edge features TJ Parker and Cade Denhoff. both are 6-foot-3 or taller and stack up at 255 pounds. Goodwin has a type on the edge, and size will always be in the spotlight.
