Swinney Names Leader in Starting Center Battle

CLEMSON – The battle for Clemson’s starting job at center rages on, but head Coach Dabo Swinney confirmed who would have the spot if the Tigers played immediately.

Ryan Linthicum, Trent Howard and Harris Sewell have all battled for the job. Linthicum is the one to come out on top to this point. The redshirt junior would “be running out first” according to Swinney Wednesday.

Over his three seasons including a redshirt, Linthicum has played in 103 offensive snaps. He’s earned the opportunity to be the starter at this state of the offseason, but Swinney wants more out of him.

“I want to see transformation in some areas of his commitment if you will. I want his body to be in the best possible place…if he puts the work in I think we’ll all like the work. He’s certainly capable,” Swinney said.

Sewell is a developmental piece in the battle and Swinney noted he “needs the most work” at the role. Heading into the spring game Saturday, Swinney said Linthicum and Sewell will be the starters for the Orange and White teams. Howard will be starting at guard.

The competition is still very early based on Swinney’s comments, but Linthicum is the leader in the clubhouse in April.
