Clemson held its annual Orange & White Spring Game on Saturday at Memorial Stadium. The Orange team defeated the White, 27-12.
Here are some observations from what we saw from both offenses during the intrasquad scrimmage:
- True freshman wide receiver and former top-35 national recruit Bryant Wesco made his presence felt early for the Orange team, beating solid coverage and scoring the game’s first touchdown on a stellar over-the-shoulder, 9-yard touchdown grab late in the first quarter.
- Wesco, who caught three passes for 26 yards and the touchdown, showed he’s the real deal. The 6-foot-2, 170-pounder certainly looks poised to make a significant impact for the Tigers this fall. Head coach Dabo Swinney said during ACC Network Extra’s broadcast that Clemson has to “put him in the crock pot and beef him up a little bit between now and August, because we’re going to need him.”
- Wesco was one-on-one on an island against sophomore corner Avieon Terrell at one point, and that was a fun matchup to watch with plenty of talent between the two youngsters.
- Redshirt sophomore backup Trent Pearman shined while playing quarterback for both teams and was the most impressive QB in the contest, showing why Swinney has called him a “baller.” He was throwing darts and dishing the rock, and between his action for the two teams, he finished 13-of-18 passing for 141 yards and had the great touchdown pass to Wesco.
- Pearman showed off his wheels, too, with a 49-yard touchdown run for the White team in the second quarter.
- Adam Randall has missed a lot of time this spring, but the junior receiver showed up in the spring game and flashed his potential with some nice plays for the Orange team, including an outstanding catch that preceded Wesco’s touchdown. He had a really good day and also hauled in a pretty 55-yard deep ball pass from junior quarterback Cade Klubnik in the third quarter.
- Speaking of Randall — who finished with four grabs for a game-high 85 yards — Klubnik’s interception in the first quarter came when he and Randall weren’t on the same page. Their timing was off, and the pass from Klubnik was picked off by true freshman corner Tavoy Feagin.
- Klubnik got off to a slow start in the first quarter, but he started to settle in as the game went along. All in all, it was an average, up-and-down day for the Tigers’ starter, who went 13-of-26 passing for 158 yards and the interception.
- Redshirt freshman quarterback Christopher Vizzina made a couple nice plays for the White but was also intercepted twice and finished 14-of-25 for 108 yards.
- It was a positive to see redshirt sophomore receiver Antonio Williams do some good things out of the slot after he was sidelined for much of last season due to injuries. He led the Orange team with five catches and tallied 62 yards.
- Redshirt sophomore tight end Josh Sapp climbed the ladder between two defenders in the third quarter and made a phenomenal 39-yard grab on a pass from Vizzina, putting his impressive athletic ability and ball skills on display. Sapp totaled 60 yards on three catches for the White team.
