CLEMSON – Do not judge Cade Klubnik off of Saturday’s Orange & White Spring Game at Memorial Stadium.
At least that is the message from Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney.
“I saw another step from him all spring, a lot more than just today,” Swinney said following the Orange’s 27-12 win.
Klubnik’s numbers were modest in the Tigers’ annual spring game. He completed 13 of 26 passes for 158 yards. He did not throw a touchdown and was charged with one interception, though there was miscommunication between him and wide receiver Adam Randall on the play.
“I thought he did a good job today. He put some good drives together, made some good decisions,” Swinney said. “Some maybe did not appear to be a good decision. Maybe it is just a simple play, but it is a great decision by a coach when we evaluate certain things. Situationally, there were some (good) things that he did.
“So, I am proud of him. He has been really, really good.”
After getting off to a slow start on Saturday, Klubnik completed 11 of his last 20 passes for 137 yards, including a 55-yard pass to Adam Randall.
“Obviously, spring games can be tough at times,” Klubnik said. “But it was fun to kind of get out there and get into a game-day environment.”
Klubnik led the Orange team on two scoring drives. He guided them on a 15-play, 75-yard drive that gave the Orange a 21-6 lead with 5:42 to play in the half.
The rising junior then led another scoring march in the second half, this time it was a 56-yard, 10-play drive that was capped with a 36-yard field goal by Robert Dunn. That gave the Orange a 24-12 lead with 11:08 to go in the third quarter.
“All spring, he has been really good,” Swinney said. “He is just getting better, better and better. I think you will see that kind of progression from him, but there is still a lot of work to do.”
