There’s a former Clemson Tiger who will fit right into the NFL game.
Cornerback Nate Wiggins is a virtual lock for the first round, and a lot of it has to do with his length and speed. Standing at 6-foot-1 and running a 4.28 40-yard dash at the combine, he has the physicals for the professional level.
Yahoo Sports’ Nate Tice released his latest big board for the 2024 NFL draft and went into detail about what makes the All-ACC corner ready for the next level.
Long and twitchy, Wiggins already has the starter kit for an NFL outstanding cornerback. Wiggins uses his twitchiness to close space on wide receivers, with an understanding of how to use his hands when looking to make a play on the ball. He constantly hinders vertical routes with his ability to stay in-step with wide receivers.
While Wiggins has a lot of positives in his game, there’s some shortcomings physically. He weighed in at 173 pounds at the NFL Scouting Combine and that’s something that could hinder him.
He’s elite when it comes a lot of his coverage skills, but the run game is what could make or break his career. Wiggins used his speed to make plays in that aspect, but he could have trouble in the NFL
He is merely fine against the run and lacks size to be a difference-maker in the area, which is concerning at the next level as teams will attack any deficiencies that show up, but he has the ability to work well in man or zone without help, with the length to match up with the longer receivers in the NFL. It will be a sliding scale with how teams want to gauge his coverage ability and lack of size.
It’ll be a tug of war between all the positives as a coverage player compared to the size concern. The good news is he won’t be drafted for his expertise in the run game and the NFL team that selects him can prepare Wiggins in that aspect.
Given his capability as a lockdown corner, Wiggins will still be a coveted prospect because of the “starter kit” mentioned to step in immediately as an NFL corner.
