CLEMSON – If you came into the Clemson spring game expecting to see a breakthrough in the kicking battle, you got a glimpse but not enough to jump off the rails.
Robert Gunn III and mid-year Nolan Hauser have battled all spring and the Orange-White game showed a slight edge. The competition has raged on through practice, and Dabo Swinney gave his thoughts postgame.
“Robert had a really good spring, we’ll see where the tallies are after today but they’re within a percentage point or two of each other. I think Robert might’ve been just on top,” Swinney said.
The Hough High standout was perfect Saturday, going 2-for-2 from 29 and 48 yards. Gunn on the other hand, went 1-for-3 with misses from 37 and 55 yards. He’s been the man in practice according to Swinney, but the youngster had the best day.
“Hauser goes out there and knocks down a couple kicks…Robert just getting back to creating the consistency to his game,” Swinney said.
When discussing the 55-yard miss, Swinney said Gunn had a “good pass at it” and it’s all about his practice consistency translating to the field in the fall. Hauser wasn’t bothered in his first Death Valley appearance, but Swinney’s word shows there’s still plenty to be decided in this one.
As the page flips into the summer, Swinney had a simple message in the kicker competition.
“To be continued.”
