A former Clemson standout is back in The Show.
On Monday, the Cincinnati Reds recalled former Tiger pitcher Carson Spiers from the Triple-A Louisville Bats.
The righthander fills the bullpen spot vacated by Tejay Antone, who was placed on the 15-day injured list Monday with right elbow inflammation.
Spiers made his Major League debut last season, when he appeared in four games (two starts) and posted a 6.92 ERA across 13 innings pitched. He threw three scoreless innings and allowed just one hit en route to recording his first big-league save on Sept. 29, 2023, against the St. Louis Cardinals in St. Louis.
Spiers was stellar in spring training this year, allowing only two earned runs over 8.2 innings pitched across three games (one start) while striking out 11 and walking just one batter.
In his minor league career spanning 2021-24, Spiers has compiled a 21-13 record with a 4.32 ERA, 1.31 WHIP and 351 strikeouts with 123 walks and 305 hits allowed in 327.1 innings over 83 games (54 starts).
The 26-year-old signed a free agent contract with the Reds back in June 2020 following his Clemson career (2017-20), when he had a 7-7 record, 19 saves and a 2.47 ERA while allowing 70 hits (.180 opponents’ batting average) and 38 walks with 103 strikeouts in 109.1 innings pitched over 71 relief appearances.
