A national outlet recently ranked the top 25 football schools, with College Football News “highlighting the 25 best based on historical greatness.”
Clemson came in just outside of the “blue bloods” tier, which College Football News classified as schools with at least 20 seasons of 10-plus wins.
The Tigers, who have 19 seasons of 10-plus wins to go with three national titles, checked in at No. 13 overall in CFN’s ranking of the top 25 football schools.
CFN came up with its ranking using the following criteria:
- How many 10-win college football seasons does your school have? It’s an easy number, and it shows consistency and longevity. Back in the day teams didn’t even play ten games, so this gives some nod to the schools with more recent success.
- This is only about the 134 schools currently playing in the FBS (no Princeton).
- ONLY FBS seasons count, so some of the former FCS/D-IAA superstar programs don’t get any love for past greatness.
- We deemphasize national titles a wee bit. Again, for most of the 150+ years of the game, national championships were based on an opinion at best, a guess at the worst.
At the No. 13 spot, Clemson is the first team outside of the “blue bloods” tier, and the highest-ranked team in the “elite schools” tier.
Joining the Tigers in that tier are the following programs: LSU (tied for No. 14), BYU (tied for No. 14), Boise State (tied for No. 14), TCU (tied for No. 17), Florida (tied for No. 17), Washington (tied for No. 19), Miami (tied for No. 19), Virginia Tech (tied for No. 21), Oregon (tied for No. 21), Auburn (tied for No. 21), Wisconsin (tied for No. 24) and Arizona State (tied for No. 24).
The schools that made CFN’s “blue bloods” tier, in order from their No. 1-12 ranking, are Alabama, Oklahoma, Michigan, Ohio State, Georgia, Nebraska, Southern Cal, Florida State, Penn State, Texas, Notre Dame and Tennessee.
