Tigers Bullpen Regaining Confidence

A three-game losing streak took the wind out of Clemson’s sails, but the pitching is regaining its confidence.

Last week, the Tigers surrendered nine runs to USC UpState and 11 to NC State. It was followed by a shut-out loss to the Wolfpack, leaving a bad taste in Clemson’s mouth.

Momentum picked back up Sunday as the Tigers had a shutout of its own, led by an eight-inning gem from Aidan Knaak before Austin Gordon delivered the finishing touches.

Tuesday was the continuation of that feeling. Clemson surrendered four runs in the first three innings, but the bullpen found its stride with Lucas Mahlstedt pitching four innings and allowing a single run while three more pitchers pitched a scoreless close to the game.

“Going through last week was a bit of a rough patch but coming out Sunday, being able to win that game and being able to handle this midweek. Games like that in the midweek against a team like that, they’re not easy to pull away with,” Mahlstedt said.

No game is a given in baseball and that’s something head coach Erik Bakich has emphasized. Mahlstedt and the Tigers are very aware of it and showed it in the 8-5 victory.

That’s a microcosm of this team and its resilience. Clemson sits at 30-6 on the season, but the confidence regained over this stretch is what the Tigers are most focused on.

“It’s huge to just be able to go out there and do that and follow it up by the other pitchers,” Mahlstedt said. “Being able to put up those zero’s and keep that lead is huge. Builds a lot of confidence for our bullpen as a whole.”
