There’s no doubt in Dabo Swinney’s mind that his quarterback can command Clemson in 2024.
Cade Klubnik was the recipient of doubt after the spring game, which is never a true test of where a team or player is. While the sample size didn’t show a lot that day, Swinney continues to emphasize that the Texas native is taking the next step.
Swinney appeared on ACC Network’s ACC PM show and was asked about where Klubnik has improved. It was a long list.
“Everything. He had a heck of a spring. He’s very accurate, we had a lot of great plays down the field this spring. I thought he developed a lot of chemistry with our core and I’m talking about tight ends, receivers, backs. Just complete command of what we’re doing offensively” Swinney said.
Last season was about learning for Klubnik. It was his first year taking over the starting job and it came with some challenges. Mistakes plagued the early season with interceptions in the first two games.
What really frustrated Swinney was the fumbles though. It’s something that he believes Klubnik has ironed out and it was evident late in the season. Clemson ripped off a five-game win streak and he had the mic drop with a 7-7, 81-yard drive to win the Gator Bowl.
“Really has grown from what he did last year. Didn’t throw many interceptions, that’s a positive but we turn the ball over too much. He had too many fumbles, took too many sacks but that’s just a part of being a first-year starter. This is a very, very talented and elite skilled kid. It’s fun to we and I think the game slowed down for him,” Swinney said.
Heading into 2024, Klubnik has a healthy supporting cast that he’s built a connection with. The chemistry with running back Phil Mafah tight end Jake Briningstool are a given, but now the receiver corps is a deep one.
That’s music to Klubnik and Swinney’s ears as the offense hopes to take a big jump with him at the helm.
“I think when we get everything around him, it’s going to be a heck of a year for him. I think he’s just going to keep getting better and better.”
