Where to Expect Clemson Players to be Selected in NFL Draft

CLEMSON — The 2024 NFL Draft kicks off Thursday night in Detroit and, as usual, Clemson has several players that likely will be selected by NFL teams over the next three days.

Cornerback Nate Wiggins, defensive tackle Ruke Orhorhoro, linebacker Jeremiah Trotter, defensive tackle Tyler Davis, defensive end Xavier Thomas and running back Will Shipley are all expected to hear their names called at some point in the three-day event.

Below is where I think these Clemson players will fall in the draft.

Nate Wiggins, CB, 6-1, 173

Draft Projection: First Round

Possible Landing Spots: Colts, Jaguars, Steelers, Buccaneers, Cardinals, Chargers, Eagles and Panthers

What is being said: Wiggins is a first-round pick. Many expect him to be selected somewhere between pick 15 and 27. “His combination of coverage talent and traits could make him a defensive coordinator’s dream. He’s tall, long and fast with rare recovery speed when beaten. Silky smooth lower-body movement allows him to mirror releases and trace routes without much effort. He can squeeze a little tighter from off-man coverage, while his range as a Cover 3 cornerback makes him a dangerous option to throw near.” –NFL.com

Ruke Orhorhoro, DT, 6-4, 294

Draft Projection: Third or Fourth Round

Possible Landing Spots: Chargers, Rams, Dolphins, Cardinals, Falcons, Steelers

What is being said: Some mock drafts have the Clemson defensive tackle being picked as early as in the second round, but most have him mocked in the third or fourth rounds. “Orhorhoro had to wait his turn and share reps during his time at Clemson, thanks to the Tigers’ deep, talented defensive fronts. His game is built upon leverage and explosiveness, but in 2023, he added a little more polish. Orhorhoro can get distracted by individual battles and needs to keep his focus trained on pursuing the ball and making positive plays.” –NFL.com

Jeremiah Trotter, Jr., ILB, 6-0, 228

Draft Projection: Third-Seven Round

Possible Landing Spots: Steelers, Falcons, Seahawks, Eagles, Chargers and Buccaneers

What is being said: It is possible Trotter goes before the fifth round. It is hard to imagine his dad’s old team passing over him in the fourth round. “Inside linebacker who plays with dogged determination and a nose for the football that helps him pack out the stat sheet. Trotter comes from NFL bloodlines and operates with consistency, play strength and a willingness to do the dirty work. He’s quick to diagnose and moves with exceptional body control and footwork to play around bodies and get to the rock. He’s not very big or long, but his football IQ makes it a moot point.” –NFL.com

Tyler Davis, DT, 6-2, 301

Draft Projection: Fifth-Seven Round

Possible Landing Spots: Jets, Rams, Chiefs, Vikings, Eagles, Falcons

What is being said: It’s hard to imagine Davis being drafted prior to Day 3. “A fireplug nose tackle with a compact frame, Davis plays much stronger than his measurables might indicate. He lacks the pure mass teams covet along the interior but uses terrific strength and leverage to bow his neck and take on all comers. He’s usually first off the snap and first in with his hands, but the size and length of an NFL interior blocker could be challenging for him as he makes the step up in class.” – NFL.com

Xavier Thomas, DE, 6-2, 244

Draft Projection: Fourth-Seven Round

Possible Landing Spots: Vikings, Packers, Patriots, Panthers and Saints

What is being said: Whoever selects Thomas, it is going to be a steal. Thomas’ upside is as big as any at the position. “Edge defender who plays with good technique and unwavering energy. Thomas will get widened out at the point of attack or knocked out of his gap by power, but his first-step quickness gives him the ability to disrupt from the back side or when playing in the gaps. Thomas is a one-speed rusher who prefers to attack up and around the arc, but he needs to add relevant counters to go with it.” –NFL.com

Will Shipley, RB, 5-11, 206

Draft Projection: Fifth-Seven Round

Possible Landing Spots: Panthers, Falcons, Colts, Texans, Raiders

What is being said: Shipley’s Pro Day was impressive, and he caught the attention of a lot of scouts. Likely to start career as a special teams player. “Versatile running back with talent as a runner, receiver and kick returner. Shipley possesses early speed, allowing him to whip through creases and outrun linebackers to the corner. He’s a flexible runner who reads up to the linebackers and curates his runs with a feel for both defensive positioning and run lane development. He can balance through contact but is unlikely to move NFL piles.” –NFL.com
