Saban, Herbstreit React to Ravens Selecting Clemson’s Wiggins

Former Clemson cornerback Nate Wiggins was selected by the Baltimore Ravens with the No. 30 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. Following the selection, ABC’s College GameDay crew talked about what he brings to Baltimore..

Hall of Fame coach Nick Saban had high praise for Wiggins, but the group as a whole had some concern about the emotion that he plays with.

“Nate is a really, really good athlete, a really good player, he he’s got all the cover skills. He’s very aggressive. A very aggressive player. I think he’s got to get a little stronger, get a little more physical so he doesn’t get pushed around but this guy is a really good athlete. He’s got good ball skills. He will tackle. Yeah, he can play man to man,” Saban said. ” I think emotionally he’s got to mature a little bit, which when you’re playing corner, man, you got to forget about the last play. You got to have etch and sketch man, because you’re going to get beat and there’s nobody that plays that position doesn’t get beat every now and then. So you got to be able to play the next play.”

During his Tigers career, Wiggins was an All-ACC cornerback and followed it up with a 4.28 40-yard dash at the NFL Combine. He finished with 80 tackles, 24 pass deflections and three interceptions.

“I think that’s the only concern is he had to grow up a lot when he was at Clemson from early in his career to where he is right now and Dabo Swinney would tell you how impressed he was with watching him mature, but that’s the area as he gets ready to go up to the NFL is that emotion is good, if you can harness it and use it to your advantage,” Kirk Herbstreit said.

Wiggins joins the Ravens after a 13-4 seaosn in hopes to take its defense and team over the hump and into the Super Bowl. The cornerback room is led by former All-Pro Marlon Humphrey and Wiggins fits as the man across from him.
