Sophomore safety Khalil Barnes, and sophomore cornerbacks Shelton Lewis and Avieon Terrell, joined the latest episode of Clemson Football’s 2 Right Turns podcast released Friday.
The trio of talented young defensive backs discussed a number of different topics, including their decisions to choose Clemson during the recruiting process and why Tiger Town ended up being the right place for them.
Barnes, a 2023 freshman All-American, committed to Clemson on Dec. 16, 2022. The former North Oconee (Ga.) High School standout and Athens native originally committed to Wake Forest before later narrowing his college decision to Clemson, Oklahoma and Notre Dame.
“Coming here, it was a real big family atmosphere,” Barnes said of Clemson. “I’m cool with a lot of the guys here. I met Shelt on my official visit to South Carolina, and it was just like the bond and stuff that I created, and it ain’t that far from home. So, everything kind of played hand-in-hand, worked itself out.”
Lewis — a two-year starter at Stockbridge (Ga.) High and Region 8-4A Athlete of the Year from the Atlanta Journal-Constitution as a senior — committed to Clemson on Aug. 8, 2022, after originally pledging to Pitt.
“I knew I wanted to be one of the top corners, like go to a school that can develop me,” Lewis said. “I think Coach (Mike) Reed and Coach (Dabo) Swinney and this program kind of can do that overall. And they were talking to me a little bit before they offered me, just kind of getting that feel of the person, who I am and my family. Then when I came up here, it was just a good atmosphere I wanted to be around every day.”
Terrell, of course, is the younger brother of former Clemson cornerback A.J. Terrell, a 2021 All-Pro and first-round draft choice of the Falcons in 2020. Avieon made his own name as a standout all-purpose player at Atlanta’s Westlake High, and he committed to the Tigers on June 6, 2022.
“I’ve been around Clemson since I was in seventh grade, so it’s always been home,” Terrell said. “And then every time I came up here for a visit, it felt like a family atmosphere. So, the games I came to, I just couldn’t leave. So, yeah, that’s why I came.”
