Opposing Coach Calls Shipley ‘Swiss Army Knife’

The running backs that have longer shelf lives in the NFL can do it all. That’s what former Tiger Will Shipley brings to the table.

Shipley was selected No. 127 overall to the Philadelphia Eagles, and it’s a competitive backfield that features Saquon Barkley as the incoming star. According to ESPN’s report from coaches around college football, one anonymous coordinator believes Shipley’s versatility will lead him to early production.

“It’s a good fit [in Philadelphia] with what they do,” an opposing coordinator said. “He’ll contribute for them. Those backs that kind of Swiss Army knives and play all three downs and be good in pass pro and know what to do, he’ll help them.”

There’s never been a doubt with Shipley’s rushing ability, totaling 2,748 yards on the ground over three seasons. Where he improved gradually at Clemson was as a receiver and in pass protection.

During his sophomore and junior seasons, he had 69 catches for 486 yards. The numbers aren’t massive, but Shipley proved he can be a receiver at a high level.

To compete for real playing time for the Eagles, he has to display that level of consistency. Training camp will be the first test, but if his Clemson career is any indication, he can be a key contributor in the Philadelphia offense.
