As we head into the last weekend of the regular season, #4 Clemson is again in a very good position heading into the postseason. In this postseason outlook, TCI takes a look at the upcoming ACC Baseball Championship as well as a quick peak into NCAA Tournament seeding projections.
Heading into the last weekend of ACC play, the Tigers have a good shot at securing their first Atlantic Division championship since 2018. The “magic number” for Clemson to secure the title is 2…meaning either two Tiger wins, a Tiger win and losses by both Florida State and NC State, or two losses by each of Florida State and NC State. The Atlantic Division title would also guarantee Clemson one of the top two seeds in the ACC Baseball Championship next week.
The ACC Baseball Championship will again be broken into four three-team pools with the winner of each pool advancing to a four-team single-elimination format. Pool A features the #1, #8, and #12 seeds, Pool B features the #2, #7, and #11 seeds, Pool C will have the #3, #6, and #10 seeds, and Pool D will have the #4, #5, and #9 seeds. If all three teams finish in a 1-1 tie during pool play, the highest seed will advance to the semifinals. Below, we take a glance at the standings and each team’s last conference series as there is a lot on the line for basically every team in the ACC this weekend given the closeness of the standings:
Seed | Team | Record | Win % | This Weekend |
1 | North Carolina | 20-7 | .741 | @ Duke |
2 | Clemson | 17-10 | .630 | Boston College |
3 | NC State | 15-11 | .577 | Wake Forest |
4 | Florida State | 15-11 | .577 | Georgia Tech |
5 | Duke | 15-12 | .556 | North Carolina |
6 | Virginia | 15-12 | .556 | Virginia Tech |
7 | Wake Forest | 15-12 | .556 | @ NC State |
8 | Georgia Tech | 14-13 | .519 | @ Florida State |
9 | Virginia Tech | 14-13 | .519 | @ Virginia |
10 | Louisville | 13-14 | .481 | Notre Dame |
11 | Miami (FL) | 10-17 | .370 | Pittsburgh |
12 | Notre Dame | 9-18 | .333 | @ Louisville |
13 | Boston College | 8-19 | .296 | @ Clemson |
14 | Pittsburgh | 8-19 | .296 | @ Miami (FL) |
Following the ACC Baseball Championship, the ACC is also positioned to be well respected in the NCAA Baseball Tournament. Historically, ACC teams need to have a .500 conference record to make the NCAA Tournament while most ACC hosts usually hit the 17-win mark in conference play. North Carolina, Clemson, NC State, Florida State, Duke, Virginia, and Wake Forest appear to be locks for the tournament field with all but Duke and NC State currently expected to host. Georgia Tech, Virginia Tech, and Louisville are all squarely on the bubble and each need a few wins over the next two weeks to make the field.
Speaking of the NCAA Tournament, both D1Baseball and Baseball America have Clemson (37-13, RPI 7) as the #6 national seed. Baseball America has the Tigers hosting San Diego (37-13, RPI 25), James Madison (30-20, RPI 47), and Austin Peay (33-18, RPI 140). The Clemson Regional is matched with the Greenville (NC) Regional which has East Carolina, Duke, Coastal Carolina, and High Point. D1Baseball has the Tigers hosting South Carolina (33-18, RPI 19), College of Charleston (36-12, RPI 50), and Wright State (30-20, RPI 117). The Clemson Regional is matched with the Terre Haute Regional which has Indiana State, Arizona, Illinois, and Bowling Green.
With conference tournaments in full swing next week, TCI will look further into hosting scenarios and regional projections next week.
