CLEMSON- Jimmy Obertop drove in four runs, while Blake Wright and Tristan Bissetta each drove in two more in leading No. 4 Clemson to an 11-6 series-clinching win over Boston College on Friday afternoon at Doug Kingsmore Stadium.
The win also clinches the Atlantic Division title for the Tigers for the first time since 2018 and makes Clemson no worse than the 2-seed in next week’s ACC Tournament in Charlotte.
Wight was 4-for-5 on the day, his third four-hit game of the season, while Obertop and Tristan Bissetta finished with three hits each.
Tristan Smith got the start, allowing two runs on four hits across four innings of work. He struck out two but also walked four. Billy Barlow would come on in relief to start the fifth and hold the Eagles to just one unearned in three innings of work, as he picked up his sixth win of the season (6-1).
Boston College grabbed an early lead as John Collins hit a 2-run shot out to dead center to give the Eagles an early 2-0 advantage. It was Collins’ second homer in as many days and just his third of the season.
The Tigers would get a run back in the bottom half of the inning. Bissetta would reach on an infield single and then move to second on a throwing error to start the frame. He would eventually score on a fielder’s choice by Jacob Jarrell, cutting the BC lead in half at 2-1.
Clemson would push across three more runs in the bottom of the third, with four consecutive two-out hits. Wright’s first home run in two weeks, a solo shot, would tie the game. It was his team-leading 20th homer of the season.
Cam Cannarella would follow that up with a double into right-center and would then come home on a double by Obertop, giving Clemson its first lead. Bissetta then singled into right, driving in Obertop, making it 4-2.
Boston College would load the bases in the top of the fourth with just one out. Collins then lined out to Alden Mathes, who then threw out Kyle Wolff at home as he attempted to tag up from third to end the inning.
The Tigers would do more 2-out damage in the bottom half of the inning, as Wright took a 2-1 pitch the opposite way into right for a single, driving in Jarrell, who was at third. Four batters later, Obertop would launch a 406-foot, 3-run shot way up off the batters eye in center, blowing the game open and giving the Tigers a 9-2 advantage.
Boston College would get a run back in the sixth without the benefit of a hit. A leadoff walk to Cameron Leary, followed by a fielder’s choice, a passed ball and a wild pitch would cut the Tigers’ lead to 9-3.
Clemson would get that run back and more in the bottom of the sixth, as an RBI double by Bissetta and a sacrifice fly by Jack Crighton made it 11-3.
Chance Fitzgerald would come on in relief to start the eighth, giving up an infield single, a walk, a double and another single without ever recording an out, allowing BC to pull to within five at 11-6.
Erik Bakich would then turn to freshman Drew Tittsworth, who retired the next three hitters to stop the bleeding. Tittsworth would get the final three outs in the ninth to end it.
With the win Clemson moves to 39-13 overall and 19-10 in ACC play. Boston College drops to 22-30 and 8-21.
The same two teams are set to play the series finale on Saturday, with first pitch scheduled for noon.
