Tyler Brown seemed always destined to be a Clemson Tiger.
The local talent, out of nearby Greenville, was a 3-star prospect coming out of high school, and despite having close to two dozen offers in total, Brown felt he was a little overlooked at times.
“I always didn’t get the recognition I felt I deserved,” Brown told Darien Rencher on the TPL Podcast. “Growing up in Greenville, South Carolina, ain’t too many scouts coming to look at us. I don’t want anything handed to me. I am a go-getter. That’s just my mentality.”
Brown was originally committed to Minnesota, but would back off that commitment about a month before the Tigers offered. While the offer from Clemson didn’t come until a few weeks before the start of the early signing period, it was the one offer Brown had been waiting on.
“That was my last offer and it was through after that,” he said. “I grew up a Clemson fan, wearing orange and purple straight out the womb. My pops, my mom, the whole family are Clemson fans. When that happened it was over with. I would have committed on the spot, but I didn’t have no words, I was in such shock.”
During his freshman campaign, Brown went out and showed he was certainly at least a little underrated by the recruiting services coming out of high school. He led the Tigers in catches (52) and receiving yards (531) and reeled in four touchdown catches, with ESPN tabbing him as one of their freshman All-Americans.
Now, with a season under his belt, Brown is looking to build off of the success he experienced in his first season with the Tigers, and help the offense take that next step.
“I feel like there is nowhere to go but up,” Brown said. “A lot of people get complacent after a good freshman year. Even coach Swinney was talking to me about it.”
“A lot of people say watch out for a freshman All-American, attitude. They can get complacent. But my mindset coming off a year like that is, I can’t stay on the same level. There aren’t any sophomore All-Americans.”
