CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Miami scored five runs in the second inning in its 8-7 victory over No. 3 Clemson in the ACC Tournament at Truist Field on Thursday.
The Hurricanes, who won Pool B and advanced to the ACC Tournament semifinal round, improved to 27-29. The Tigers dropped to 40-14.
Following the game, Clemson head coach Erik Bakich and veteran infielder Jacob Hinderleider spoke about the loss to Miami that eliminated the Tigers from making the semifinals.
“Tough game for us,” Bakich said. “We gave up the big inning early with the five spot, and then pitched well for the most part out of the bullpen. I thought Lucas Mahlstedt and Reed Garris did a nice job, gave us a chance, and we had plenty of opportunities to capitalize to score some additional runs, and just didn’t get the job done. …
“So, tip of the cap to Miami. They did what they needed to do to advance. So, it stings that we can’t go through a loser’s bracket and still do it, but it’s a good opportunity to just get focused on playing well. We know we have a lot of baseball left, but we’re going to need to play a better brand of baseball, which we will. Our guys will respond, and we’ll get a chance to do it tomorrow.”
The Tigers conclude their ACC Tournament by playing No. 7 seed Louisville on Friday at 3 p.m. on ACC Network.
