Xavier Griffin’s ties to Clemson go back a little bit.
The 4-star linebacker (Gainesville, Ga) was one of the Tigers’ opening offers over the weekend, and after having visited for Elite Junior Day back in March, he plans to return to campus on Wednesday to work out at Dabo Swinney’s high school camp.
“I went up this past spring and it was a great visit,” Griffin told The Clemson Insider. “Enjoyed seeing my teammate Champ Thompson out there getting reps in. I think being able to sit down with coach (Wes) Goodwin, coach (Mickey) Conn, and coach (Nick) Eason was cool.”
While getting an offer from Clemson is special in its own right, what makes it mean even more is the fact that his grandmother played basketball for the school.
“Getting an offer from Clemson is exciting but special for me,” Griffin said. “Because my granny (mom’s mom) played there on a basketball scholarship in the 1980’s.”
At least one of the recruiting services ranks Griffin as the top linebacker in the country and two have him inside the Top 20 overall, regardless of position. While the 6-foot-4, 210-pound blue-chip talent has yet to firm up any timeline for making any decision, he does know he is looking for a school with a strong culture that can support him on and off the field.
“I’m just enjoying the process and taking everything in,” Griffin said. “I’m looking for a coaching staff and team that I can vibe with and have good chemistry. Also they need to have a good life after program because football doesn’t last forever.”
