Swinney Still ‘King’ of ACC

After having made six consecutive appearances in the College Football Playoff and winning two national titles, Clemson has failed to make the field in each of the past three seasons.

The Tigers dropped three games in 2021, three more in 2022, but still managed to hit the 10-win mark in each of those seasons. Then in 2023, Clemson dropped four games and failed to hit the double-digit win mark for the first time since 2010.

Despite the what some would call a slide, Dabo Swinney is still viewed as the best coach in the ACC, according to CBS Sports’ Chip Patterson.

“For all the chatter about Clemson’s supposed downfall, the king remains the king in the ACC,” Patterson wrote. “Swinney and the Tigers have claimed seven of the last 12 ACC championships, most recently winning in 2022, and account for every one of the league’s College Football Playoff appearances since 2015. Now there is certainly some urgency for bounce-back as last year’s 4-4 conference record marks the program’s worst since 2010, but expectations of ACC title contention remain heading into 2024.”

CBS Sports Best ACC Coach Rankings

  1. Dabo Swinney (Clemson)
  2. Mike Norvell (Florida State)
  3. Dave Doeren (NC State)
  4. Jeff Brohm (Louisville)
  5. Dave Clawson (Wake Forest)

Swinney enters the 2024 season as the nation’s active leader in winning percentage among head coaches with at least 10 years of experience. His 170 wins are the most of any active coach whose entire head coaching tenure has come at one school, and he has produced 83 NFL Draft picks and 18 first-round picks, both the most of any active coach since his hire.
