Great news regarding Mike Williams.
The former Clemson star wideout will suit up for his new NFL team in Week 1 of the season.
Williams, now of course a member of the New York Jets, will be available for the team’s Sept. 9 season opener against the San Francisco 49ers.
Coming off a season-ending ACL injury last season, Williams has been cleared to play vs. the 49ers, per Jets head coach Robert Saleh.
According to ESPN staff writer Rich Cimini, Williams won’t play a full-time role in the opener, but will be on the field enough to “make his mark felt.”
“He’s going to be available Week 1, but to expect him to be 100% — we’re going to be very smart with how we use him,” Saleh said, via Cimini. “He can be plenty available to make his mark felt.”
Williams performed well in Thursday’s practice with several receptions for 100-plus yards, per Saleh.
“[I] feel good,” Williams said after practice, via Cimini. “I mean, this is what I expected. I was putting the work in this whole time to make myself available to perform this season, so it’s all paying off at the right time.”
Williams was able to get back on the practice field earlier this month after being activated from the physically unable to perform (PUP) list once he passed his physical.
Williams, who suffered a torn ACL in Week 3 of last season, is entering his first season with the Jets. He signed a one-year deal worth up to $15 million with the Jets in March after being released by the Los Angeles Chargers.
The Jets open the 2024 campaign against the defending NFC Champion 49ers in San Francisco on Monday Night Football (8:15 p.m. ET Sept 9., ESPN/ABC).
One of the NFL’s most dynamic and explosive wide receivers, Williams recorded 19 receptions for 249 yards and one touchdown for the Chargers in 2023 before his season was cut short by the torn ACL.
Williams, 29, spent the first seven seasons of his NFL career with the Chargers, who made him the seventh overall selection in the 2017 draft.
The 6-foot-4, 218-pounder has dealt with injuries throughout his time in the league but been highly productive when healthy, piling up 309 catches for 4,806 yards and 31 touchdowns across 88 career games.
