Clemson had a couple of scholarships open up in the spring, and the question was how the Tigers would use those scholarships that became available.
As you probably recall, Clemson saw true freshman defensive end Adam Kissayi enter the transfer portal this spring, as well as redshirt freshman offensive lineman Zack Owens.
Kissayi has since transferred to Minnesota, while Owens transferred to Colorado.
In July Swinney was asked about who would fill the scholarships and at the time did not know yet.
The Clemson Insider figured out that one of the scholarships has not been filled, and the other one has been filled by Armon Mason, according to Clemson’s game notes this week.
A redshirt junior defensive end from Richmond Hill, Ga., Mason came to Clemson as a walk-on in 2021 and is now on scholarship, whereas he was not for the Gator Bowl against Kentucky back in December.
Mason enters this season having appeared in six games in his career with one defensive snap and one tackle. The 6-foot-3, 240-pounder did not play in 2023 while rehabbing from a season-long injury.
He is the son of NBA veteran and the late Anthony Mason, whose career included stints with the New Jersey Nets, Denver Nuggets, New York Knicks, Charlotte Hornets, Milwaukee Bucks and Miami Heat.
With Clemson putting Mason on scholarship, the Tigers currently have only 84 players on scholarship. The current scholarship cap in football is currently set at 85 per team. TCI updated on Football Scholarship Tracker based on the latest game week notes.
