Did Clemson Contemplate Putting Vizzina into Game vs. UGA?

During his weekly radio show on Monday night, Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney commented on whether the Tigers thought about playing backup quarterback Christopher Vizzina late in Saturday’s game against Georgia.

Swinney said that getting Vizzina into the game – at the end of the lopsided 34-3 loss, in order to give him some snaps — wasn’t something the Tigers contemplated.

They wanted Klubnik to finish the contest, according to Swinney, who said he “was proud” of how Klubnik played.

“Absolutely. That was a great experience for Cade and for everyone, and he really handled it well,” Swinney said. “I was proud of him.”

Klubnik, a second-year starter, went 18-of-29 passing for 142 yards and an interception against the Bulldogs.

Swinney gave his assessment of the junior’s performance in Saturday’s game.

“His worst play was the first play,” Swinney said. “I mean, that’s going 20 to 30 yards, and we just missed it, and it’s unfortunate because those are the type of momentum things that create a lot in that type of game. But he really settled in, he made some nice plays. I was disappointed in the sack that he took. He didn’t see it till late, but he still could’ve thrown it away, and that put us in a second-and-long. And then on the quarterback run, he was too fast out in front of the puller, because that’s going to walk in for a touchdown if he’s just a little more patient.

“But all in all, he settled in, he did a lot of good stuff as far as the checks. Made some nice throws, should’ve had a couple more caught. It was a big-time play with him and Antonio (Williams)… just unfortunate that we had some momentum killers.”

Swinney added that was really pleased with Klubnik “and just his psyche, and then his leadership after the game was tremendous.”

“And how he showed up here today,” Swinney said. “I know we got one game and everybody just looks at the score or this and that. But this kid’s a competitor, and I really think he’s going to have a great year.”
