There was plenty of buzz in the offseason about the explosiveness that would be seen from Clemson’s offense this season, but unfortunately for the Tigers, that didn’t show up in last Saturday’s opener against Georgia.
Explosive plays were in short supply for Clemson offensively, and the Tigers managed to produce only one field goal in their 34-3 loss to the Bulldogs in Atlanta.
During his Tuesday press conference, Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney was asked about the lack of explosive plays vs. UGA (and in recent seasons) and whether he thinks there’s anything structurally or philosophically with the offense that needs to change moving forward.
Swinney pointed to miscues and execution, or a lack thereof, as the primary reason for what’s holding the offense back.
“I think the main thing is we need to stop shooting ourself in the foot,” Swinney said.
“First play of the game goes for probably 30 yards. … We didn’t make it. So, we’ve got to make the plays there, make the layups. … And then we hit a big play. We hit the first big play of the game. Then we hit another big play, but we get a penalty, and now you’re against the chains. So, if we do the things that we need to do, we’ll be fine.”
Against Georgia, Clemson was forced to punt on each of its first five possessions (including three three-and-outs). All in all, seven of Clemson’s 11 total drives resulted in punts, with three of the other drives resulting in a kneel-down before halftime, an interception and a turnover on downs. The Tigers averaged just five plays and 20 yards per drive with the average time of possession being 2:28.
Swinney tipped his cap to a Georgia defense that limited Clemson to 188 total yards and the three points, which tied for the fewest in a game under Swinney (since 2008).
“How ‘bout let’s give Georgia a little credit, too. They’re pretty good,” Swinney said. “I don’t know many people that are going to line up and get a million big plays on them boys.”
“We’ll get better from it,” Swinney added. “We’re in a good spot, man.”
