CLEMSON — Dabo Swinney was not happy about the chop block that did not get called in Clemson’s 66-20 win over App State on Saturday.
“We will turn that one in,” Swinney said.
The play in question came with 12:45 to play in the second quarter, when Tigers’ defensive end Peter Woods was chopped down by App State’s Eli Wilson.
The Mountaineers’ tight end came down the line of scrimmage and took Woods down by diving below the 6-foot-3, 315-pound defensive end’s knees. No penalty was called on a play that left Woods on the ground and in pain.
“Chop blocks are illegal. You can’t chop block, ever,” Swinney said. “Cut blocks are legal at times, as long as you are 10 and 2. But if you are going across the line of scrimmage and a guy is not turned and coming 10 and 2, you can’t cut.
“If a guy is boxing it, you can’t cut from the side.”
Woods was slow to get up off the field before limping off under his own power and going into the injury tent to be evaluated by the medical staff. He eventually came out of the medical tent, and then later came back onto the field after halftime with a brace on his left knee.
“We will see and will evaluate that,” Swinney said.
Swinney gave an update on Woods’ status after Saturday’s game.
“I think he’s okay, but we’ll see tomorrow when we do a more thorough check,” Swinney said. “It seems like most of the things that we were really concerned about was okay.”
Following an open date next Saturday, Clemson will return to Death Valley for its ACC opener against NC State on Saturday, Sept. 21.
